HOUSTON (November 15, 2023) – Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston is proud to announce the fifth annual Gershenson Lecture, titled “Democracy, Faith, and the Rise of Christian Nationalism.” This thought-provoking event will take place on December 5, 2023, at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.
The keynote speaker for this year’s lecture is Amanda Tyler, the Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty. Tyler’s presentation will delve into the intersection of democracy, faith, and the rise of Christian Nationalism in the United States. She will emphasize the importance of safeguarding religious freedoms for all individuals, regardless of their beliefs.
The program, organized by the Interfaith Relations and Community Partnerships Department, will also feature a fireside chat with local community and faith leaders. Rev. Alexander E.M. Johnson, Executive Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. Lynn Hargrove, General Presbyter of the Presbytery of New Covenant, and Bishop Michael Rinehart from the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will join Tyler in this engaging conversation.
The event will commence with a lunch and speaker session from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by an optional workshop from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Attendees will be provided with a box lunch, and vegetarian options will be available upon request. Press is welcome to attend.
