Longer event description:
Join us for a real-time virtual conversation with Megan Phelps Roper, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church. Her book, Unfollow: A  Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church, debuted in October 2019.  It chronicles her life inside “America’s most hated family” and their worldwide notoriety for picketing military funerals and expressing hateful ideologies. A chance encounter on Twitter led her to doubt what she had been taught and ultimately led to her departure from the church and a new life as an author, speaker and activist exposing the dangers of extremism and hatred.

Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston’s women’s initiative, IMpower, is hosting this powerful conversation with Megan Phelps Roper as part of its 2020-2021 programming.

“Wildly brave and incredibly thoughtful…This book will leave you holding your heart.” — Sarah Silverman

“From her story, we can learn things sorely needed in our age: empathy, openness, and how we can best build bridges across divided lines.”— Chris Anderson, Head of TED

“If you want to see how a girl raised on religious fanaticism and sectarian hatred can be cured by the power of honest reasoning, read this book.”— Sam Harris
