Volunteering is all in the Family

Interfaith Ministries is blessed to have many hardworking and committed volunteers.

Each year, more than 4,000 sign up to deliver pet food, pack breakfast bags, collect furnishing for refugees and perform a host of other tasks that, when combined, add up to thousands of hours of volunteer time each year.

As Manager of Volunteer Services, they are all special to me. Some though are particularly inspirational.

Meet Tonya Cossie one of our Feed a Senior Today (F.A.S.T.) delivery volunteers. The FAST program is designed so volunteers can deliver meals in a short time frame, such as over the lunch hour.

Each Wednesday, Tonya and her four children Tatiyana, 17, Tynaya, 14, Trayce, 10, and Tauryss, 5, deliver meals to 12 seniors living in a senior apartment near downtown.

Tonya homeschools her children and this is something special they do to give back to the community. She says it’s a way to show her children the importance of helping others in need. It is also beneficial for the senior clients because they do not often have the opportunity to interact with children.

“One of our seniors calls us her “favorite family,” Tonya says.

Tonya and her children are definitely several of our favorite volunteers. They not only brighten our day, they brighten the day for so many homebound seniors.

Thanks, Tonya, Tatiyana, Tynaya, Trayce, and Tauryss from all of us at Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston.
