A Statement of Sympathy from Houston’s Faith Community for the Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting

We, the undersigned organizations and faith communities, represent various backgrounds and traditions, walks of life and points of view. We join with Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston in making this statement as we believe that the “strength of shared beliefs” is what keeps us connected and united.

We are united in expressing our deepest sympathies and sadness in the aftermath of one of the worst mass shootings in modern American history. The 59 slain and more than 500 injured at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, friends and community, lives that are now ended or changed forever.

As we offer our condolences, we also know that the work of building a more connected, respectful, and just society where we “respect thy neighbor” has never been more important. While the ways are many in achieving this society, the reasons are evident: we all long for a country where we can gather in the spirit of peace, where we can speak with each other in the spirit of dignity, and where we can live our lives in the spirit of a shared destiny.
