Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IM), along with local faith and community leaders,  gathered  Wednesday Feb. 1, 2017 at IM’s Akbar Ali Jamal Great Hall for a refugee prayer vigil. Houston has long been a city that has welcomed those seeking safe harbor from persecution and war’s violence. The candlelight prayer vigil was an important chance for our community to come together in peace and hope around the Strength of Shared Beliefs.   The evening’s speakers included: Martin B. Cominsky, President & CEO of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston Rev. Lynn Hargrove, Stated Clerk, Presbytery of New Covenant Rev. Hannah Atkins, Rector, Trinity…

Your Support of AniMeals Makes Tails Wag

We put out a call in early December for help filling the shelves of our aniMeals on Wheels program. At the time, aniMeals was down to just a few pounds of dog food and we weren’t sure we’d have enough kibble to feed the beloved pets of our Meals on Wheels seniors. The response we got from Houstonians was overwhelming.  Boxes and boxes of food came delivered from Amazon and Walmart, and individuals stopped by throughout the day to drop off food – not just for dogs, but for our cat clients, too. To all of you, we say thanks!…

Meet our Volunteer of the Month!

"We are excited to announce that our Volunteer of the Month is Kyle Sellers! Kyle began volunteering with Interfaith Ministries in May 2015. He was the first volunteer to assist us with supervising volunteers groups and has continued to work with groups almost every weekend they are here. His dedication extends further than the weekends that he comes to help with our volunteer groups. In November, Kyle showed up at 7:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and participated as an onsite volunteer at our annual Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels event. Toward the end of the event, we realized that we were…

Meet Eunice

Eunice and her husband Matthew look forward to Sundays because they get to listen to gospel music on the radio. Matthew has dementia, but still remembers the words to the songs he sang while he was in the church choir. Neither Eunice nor Matthew can get around very well. Eunice suffered a stroke a few years ago and has been in a wheelchair ever since. She keeps a small radio on the table next to where she sits.

Refugee Close-up: Abdul

Abdul, his wife Marweza, and 2 ½ year old son Mohammad arrived in Houston six months ago. In Afghanistan, Abdul was an electrical engineer and enjoyed his job. He had many benefits as an engineer working with US military personnel. While he loves his home country, he and his family fled due to safety concerns. On his way to and from work—a short 15 minute drive—he saw bomb blasts every day. His family was constantly worried about their safety.

Meet Tom and Shirley

At 92, Tom is one of our older Meals on Wheels recipients. He and his wife Shirley have been together almost 70 years. “I will never forget my first glimpse of Shirley,” says Tom, with a glint in his eye. “Out of the corner of my eye I saw her get into a green ’41 Chevy and God said, there’s your girl!” Tom was born in Schulenberg, Texas and lived on a farm where his family grew corn, cotton, and beans. He says he learned to be self-reliant from his parents: “When you grow up on a farm, you are…

L’shanah Tovah

Jews around the world will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah from Sundown on October 2 to nightfall on October 3. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated as the Jewish New Year, the first day of Tishrei, the month that opens the autumn liturgical season. The celebration of Rosh Hashanah is rooted in the Bible. Leviticus 23:24 and Numbers 29:1 are prominent citations. Interestingly, Rosh Hashanah is etymologically linked to the Arabic Ras as-Sanah, celebrated as the Islamic New Year.

Volunteering is all in the Family

Interfaith Ministries is blessed to have many hardworking and committed volunteers. Each year, more than 4,000 sign up to deliver pet food, pack breakfast bags, collect furnishing for refugees and perform a host of other tasks that, when combined, add up to thousands of hours of volunteer time each year. As Manager of Volunteer Services, they are all special to me. Some though are particularly inspirational. Meet Tonya Cossie one of our Feed a Senior Today (F.A.S.T.) delivery volunteers. The FAST program is designed so volunteers can deliver meals in a short time frame, such as over the lunch hour.

Each summer, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IM) takes on the vitality of a college campus with the arrival of our university interns. The interns come to learn more about the valuable work IM provides for the community, while helping with tasks as far ranging as soliciting  for donations for our gala auction to registering volunteers for storm meal delivery during Operation IMpact.
