HOUSTON (November 23, 2021) – Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (Interfaith Ministries) is one of several agencies resettling Afghan refugees in the wake of the United States’ withdrawal from that country. Many of the refugees had been working with American troops, which put their lives in danger.
Since September when these families began to arrive in Houston, Interfaith Ministries has raised over $1 million to assist them from a diverse cross-section of donors. “This crisis seemed to pull at the heartstrings of people from every faith tradition, background, and political party. It has been inspiring to see our community so unified in their desire to welcome these new neighbors,” shared Interfaith Ministries President and CEO Martin B. Cominsky.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Comcast approached Cominsky to find a way to share its resources. Those discussions resulted in a Thanksgiving week meal delivery to 68 Afghan families. This will be the refugees’ first traditional American Thanksgiving in their new homes.

The traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by the executive chefs at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston included local field greens salad with cucumber, tomatoes and citrus vinaigrette, curry vegetables with rice, specially-prepared Halal turkey breast slices and a whole freshly baked pumpkin pie. Each family box provides Thanksgiving dinner for a family of four. Volunteers will deliver the meals to refugee’s homes and welcome our new neighbors to Houston with this Thanksgiving treat.
