Additional frozen breakfast and weekend meals are available for seniors who solely rely on Meals on Wheels for their nutritional support. Although Meals on Wheels is not an income based program, the average recipient is female, age 65-79 with an annual income of less than $10,000. |
We have reached 948 senior sponsorships. Your help is still greatly needed. Help Feed Houston Hungry Seniors |

Many hungry seniors are unable to travel to area food pantries to receive assistance. Also, for many low-income seniors, money to buy food runs low by the third week of the month. IM started the Food for Seniors program to ensure that seniors and their families have additional food to get them through the month. On the second Saturday of each month, volunteers box groceries at the Houston Food Bank. On the third Saturday of the month, volunteers deliver those boxes to seniors.
For homebound seniors in the Meals on Wheels program, the companionship of a pet is essential to their health and happiness. However, the cost and ability to acquire food for their best friends is an impractical task. To help decrease the burden that seniors feel when it comes to feeding themselves and their pet companion, Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston has initiated the new AniMeals on Wheels program which provides donated pet food to the pet companions of Houston area Meals on Wheels recipients. An alternative to Meals on Wheels, Dining In offers a convenient way to provide good nutrition to those who may have difficulties with the daily activities of shopping and cooking with no waiting list. The service is very flexible and offers short and long-term solutions to meet a person's nutritional needs. Dining In provides hot meal service Monday through Friday and frozen meals for the weekends. Over
70% of our senior clients have needs that extend beyond nutritional
imbalances. These needs include major and minor home repairs, lawn care,
utilitiy assistance, mobility assistive devices, connection to appropriate
prescription drug plans and contact with Adult Protective Services.
Client Services staff assess needs, guide seniors through paperwork,
link them to medical and financial resources and generate volunteer
support for essential home repairs. Recently they have also begun helping
seniors with the intangible elements that create a whole and happy life
by joining senior clients with warm, compassionate volunteer visitors
in order to reduce isolation and combat the overwhelming loneliness
that sometimes plagues the homebound and exacerbates chronic disease. |
