Studies
from the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
show that more than half of all seniors cared for at home
suffer from under-nutrition or mal-nutrition - low or
dangerously low levels of protein and other nutrients.
A nutrient-poor diet accelerates the loss of muscle mass,
weakens the immune system, increases the risk of pneumonia
and exacerbates existing health conditions. Health problems
make it difficult for seniors to purchase and prepare
food for themselves, and propels the tendency to consume
easy, yet empty foods, such as toast, or crackers.
Equally
as important as the meal are the smiles and companionship
that accompany each meal delivery. For many homebound
seniors, the Meals on Wheels driver is the only person
they see during the day. Each meal is delivered by a driver
who checks on the well-being of each participant - bringing
peace of mind to seniors and their families.
It
costs just $5 per day to provide a nutritious meal to
each senior on our waiting list, which comes to $100 per
month, or $1,200 per year. Currently, MOWGH serves more
that 3,500 homebound seniors, with a list of over 1,000
more seniors waiting for service.

Everyday
Meals on Wheels visits over 3,500 members of this communities
greatest resource, its seniors. Meals on Wheels not only
brings a nutritious meal to these homebound seniors, but
gives them what they want the most; the opportunity to
have physical contact with someone daily and continue
to live independently and with dignity. Help
us exceed our goal of 1,000 senior sponsorships.
