Oct 7: Amazing Faiths Project: World
Religions Class - Fall Series. In this short public
series, Dr. Jill Carroll of Rice University's The
Boniuk Center for Religious Tolerance and Resident Scholars
will explain the "basics" of 5 major world religions:
Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism. An introductory
session will give an overview of how to study and think about
religions in a more scholarly, non-devotional context, and will
illustrate the basic components of all major world religions.
People of all backgrounds are welcome, and will find this class
helpful regardless of any prior knowledge about religion. Classes
will be held at the Islamic
Da'wah Center at 201 Travis St Houston, TX 77002 and will
meet from 7pm-9pm on the following dates: 10/7/08; 10/14/08;

Oct 9: Schubert: The Final Flowering - A
concert series presented by The
Rothko Chapel. Internationally acclaimed English-born pianist,
Clive Swansbourne, will perform powerful works Schubert composed
during the last six years of his life. Pre-recital talk given
by Clive Swansbourne from 7:15pm to 7:45pm. Concert begins at
8pm at The Rothko Chapel located at 1409 Sul Ross, Houston,
TX 77006. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students.

Oct 10 and 11: An Evening of Native American
Dance: Tewa Dancers from the North - presented by The
Rothko Chapel. Ten dancers from the Ohkay Owingeh/San Juan
Pueblo north of Santa Fe, will share their celebrative dances
with traditional drums and authentic dress. A question &
answer period will folllow. After the performance, the Chapel
will host the Houston premiere of the recent documentary "Dancing
from the Heart", that features the Tewa Dancers from the
North. In the film, Andrew Garcia talks about his efforts to
maintain Pueblo spiritual & cultural traditions while reconciling
his heritage with contemporary life. Admission is free and open

Oct 11: Concert for Peace hosted by
St. Philip Presbyterian
Church. The program is a meditative evening of
silence, poetry and music that aspires to turn hearts and minds
to God's Shalom (peace), to wholeness for all God's children.
Featured soloists will perform works of Shubert and Brahms.
The concert will take place at 7:30pm in St. Philip's sanctuary
located at 4807 San Felipe, Houston, TX 77056. Admission is
free and open to the public.
Oct 12: Championship Salute in Honor
of First Responders for Hurricane Ike. Our local professional
soccer team, The
Houston Dynamo, is asking all first responder volunteers
& professionals to be part of this Sunday's game at the
University of Houston, Robertson
Stadium. All first responders will be asked to participate
in an on-field recognition during half-time. It is free for
first responders and their families. Please RSVP to lstutt@houstondynamo.com

Moments at The Rothko Chapel - Sikh. This interfaith meditation
series explores the connection between contemplation and well-being.
Each month, a faith leader from a different contemplative tradition
will offer a short talk and then lead a guided meditation. This
month features a Sikh faith leader. A parallel series is held
at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. For information about meditations

Oct 17: Rothko on Rothko - Mark Rothko's
son, Christopher, will discuss his father's philosophical and
creative genius. Currently, Christopher helps organize exhibitions
of his father's work around the globe. He is the editor of The
Artist's Reality, a book of his father's philosophical writings.

Oct 19: For the Soul: Morton Feldman's Rothko
Chapel and Other Selections - presented by The
Rothko Chapel. The CANTARE Choir will perform
a work by Morton Feldman commissioned by Dominique de Menil
in memory of their good friend, Mark Rothko. Also hear compositions
by Palestrina, Holst, Vaughan Williams and Ticheli. Blake Williams,
percussion; Laura Smith, harp. Tickets are $25 for adults/$20

Oct 22: A Long Shadow: Emily Dickinson and
Contemporary Poets. This evening, organized by beloved outgoing
University of Houston faculty member and celebrated poet Mark
Doty, will focus on contemporary poetry inspired by Emily Dickinson.
Doty, as well as special guest poets Alice Fulton and Susan
Howe, will read samples of their own works alongside poems by
Dickinson. This program is presented by the University of Houston
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts in conjunction with
the upcoming performance of Lightning at Our Feet.

Oct 25: Amazing Faiths Project Faith
Tour - This is a monthly opportunity for the general
public to explore various faith traditions and join in directed
conversation about the tenets of each faith, their practice,
beliefs and sites of worship or community gatherings. Participants
visit two faith communities on weekends around the Greater Houston
Metropolitan Area. The tours conclude at Rothko Chapel with
a structured discussion and evaluation. This Saturday we will
tour The Hare Krishna
Temple and Christ
Church Cathedral. Transportation is provided from Interfaith
Ministries for Greater Houston located at 3217 Montrose
Blvd., Houston, TX 77006. Please note that all parking is on-street
and somewhat limited. Please carpool if at all possible. To

Oct 30: Boniuk Center Bridge Builders Lecture
Series - This is part of an ongoing lecture series presented
by The
Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious
Tolerance at Rice University. It is free and open to the public.

and educator as well as the founder of the Art
of Living Foundation and the International

Lives. As Texas prospers economically, the precious environment
is under assault from all sides, challenging the everyday lives
of people in many areas of the state. What happened to the political

Sansom will discuss from first-hand experience the state of

Zagajewski and pianist Sarah Rothenberg present an evening of

Nov 24: Inside Africa: Three Hidden Wars.
Paul Salopek, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Tribune
foreign correspondent, will talk about the underreported conflicts,
genocides, and human rights abuses in Africa. He won the 2001
Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on political strife and disease
epidemics ravaging Africa, witnessed firsthand as he traveled,
sometimes by canoe, through rebel-controlled regions of the
Congo. He also made headlines when he was kidnapped and held
for 30 days in Darfur. He will discuss the three wars he has
been covering in Africa: Somalia, Darfur (Sudan) and Congo.
Elias Bongmba, professor of religious studies at Rice University,
will lead a question and answer session. Admission is free and

Dec 9: Messiaen Centennial Concert: Visions
de l'Amen. Olivier Messiaens great religious piano
cycle was first performed by the composer and his student and
future wife Yvonne Loriod in a semi-secret art gallery concert
in Nazi-occupied Paris. Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg,
who studied the music of Messiaen with Loriod in Paris, is joined
by Marilyn Nonken, the contemporary music virtuoso who made
an outstanding Da Camera debut in 2007. Performance will be
at 7:30pm at The

Dec 19: Season of Light. Just as Mark
Rothkos Chapel paintings are full of light despite their
dark hue, so too can the darkness of winter be the occasion
for a mystical encounter with the power of light. This evening
will be a celebration of light and will feature Sonja Bruzauskas,
Mezzo Soprano, Jennifer Keeney, flautist and Anita Kruse, pianist.
Known as Trio Angelico, these three will premiere a composition
by well known composer and pianist, Paul English who has performed
and recorded with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, and Fathead
Newman. This program is presented by Divas World Productions.
Admission is free and open to the public. Performance will be
