Buddhism is a religion practiced by nearly 350 million people around the world.icon_buddhism

The term "Buddhism" comes from the word budhi, which means "to awaken". Its origins date back to about 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama, known as the Buddha, was himself awakened or enlightened at the age of 35. Buddhism is considered more than just religion; it is a philosophy. The Buddhist path can be summed up in these instructions: lead a moral life, be mindful and aware of thoughts and actions and develop wisdom and understanding.

Population:

World - 350 million
United States - 401,000

Tenets:

  • The image of the Buddha is not to be worshiped or asked for favors. It is a reminder to encourage Buddhists to strive for peace and develop love within oneself. Bowing to the statue is an expression of gratitude for the teaching.
  • Be tolerant of all other religions. There is a long term purpose within everyone's existence and it can be discovered through wisdom and true understanding. Do not preach and try to convert, only explain if an explanation is sought.
  • The Buddha's many teachings can be summed up by the Four Noble Truths:
    • Life is suffering. Life includes pain, getting old, disease and finally death.
    • Suffering is caused by craving and aversion.
    • Suffering can be overcome and true happiness can be obtained.
    • The Noble 8-Fold Path is the path that leads to the end of suffering.
  • In summary, the Noble 8-Fold Path is being moral in speech, action and livelihood by focusing the mind on being fully aware of thoughts and actions, developing wisdom by understanding the Four Noble Truths and developing compassion for others.
